Calcio Storico: Florence’s Ancient Sport
Calcio Storico dates back centuries and is still played today in the heart of Florence. This ancient form of football is a unique and exhilarating way to experience the city’s past.
History of Calcio Storico
Calcio Storico has been around since the 16th century and is believed to have been invented by Giovanni de’ Bardi, a member of the Medici family. It was originally played on Piazza Santa Croce and was created as a way for players to celebrate their favorite saints. The original game only had 27 players instead of today’s four teams. Today, it’s still played every June in front of thousands of spectators who come from all over the world to witness this historic event.
The Rules
Calcio Storico combines elements from rugby, soccer, wrestling, and martial arts into one intense game that can last up to an hour with no break or pause in play. Each team consists of 27 players wearing colorful uniforms representing different districts throughout Florence. There are no referees or fouls; instead, order is maintained by “the commissario” who moves between teams settling disputes as needed. The goal is for one team to score goals against another using their hands, feet or any body part except for arms and headbutts!
Spectator Experience
Calcio Storico has become an integral part of Florentine culture over hundreds of years and continues to draw thousands of tourists each year who want to witness its history first-hand. Whether you choose to support your home team or simply enjoy some exciting Italian sportsmanship, experiencing a match at Piazza Santa Croce is something that should be on every tourist’s must-do list when visiting Florence! So what are you waiting for? Come check out this exciting ancient sport today!
