It goes without saying that all throughout Italy the festivity of Christmas is a central part of life. It’s more than a single day of presents, it’s a bit of a season unto itself, starting in the beginning of December, running through Christmas, past the New Year and finishing with Beffana on Jan. 6. Traditions are ageless, from food, family, passeggiata, and more… but at the center of it is a time for pause to experience the simple joy of an Italian Christmas.
Lucca grows as a Christmas destination in Italy
Christmas Villages are a critical part of an Italian Christmas. Some are famous and attract people from all over the country as well as tourists. Others are less known. We discussed all of this in an earlier Podcast episode that you can listen to here.
Here in Lucca, headquarters of The Italian Life podcast and this website, the build up to Christmas has been growing in extravagance the past few years, including more lights, more events and more people out in the city. With lights, markets, events, and attractions, the city has become more of an attraction, trying to assert itself as one of the most enchanting destinations to experience the magic of the festive season.
Lights! The streets of Lucca’s historic center, with their medieval alleys and historic squares, transform into an illuminated pathway that captivates both young and old. Every corner of the city, from Piazza San Michele to Piazza Napoleone, is adorned with elegant lights, while sparkling Christmas trees enhance the most iconic spots. Particularly enchanting is the large Christmas tree towering in Piazza San Martino, next to the cathedral, symbolizing the warmth of the festivities and an essential stop for a memorable photo.
Lucca’s own Christmas Market in the center of town is like the beating heart of Christmas in Lucca. It enlivens the city. In Piazza Napoleone, traditional stalls offer local crafts, Christmas decorations, typical products, and plenty of gift ideas. The air is filled with the scents of sweets, mulled wine, and roasted chestnuts, making it impossible to resist the flavors of Tuscan tradition.
The Christmas Market offers fun for the kids with virtual sleigh rides and of course the historic carousel, in addition to many booths with Christmas treats.
Ice Skating. The skating rink in Lucca is a must-see attraction of Christmas in Lucca. For the first time, the city set it up in front of the charming Caffè delle Mura. With the backdrop of the city’s historic walls, skating becomes a magical and fun experience.
If you’re looking for a Christmas destination that combines tradition, culture, and an enchanting atmosphere, Lucca is the perfect choice. And with Christmas here, the party is not over. We will soon celebrate the new year, and then a day of Beffana, which is fun for the kids (and all us adults who like to act like kids any chance we get!).
With its sparkling lights, markets, and the timeless charm of its walls, Christmas here is an experience that stays in the heart. What are you waiting for? Come and experience the magic of Christmas in Lucca!
