Harvesting Olives: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you are looking for a unique way to experience the culture and history of the Mediterranean, then olive harvesting is a great option. It can be an exciting, fun, and educational adventure that will give you a better appreciation of the local landscape. Luckily for you, here at Italian Life, we have an adopt an olive tree program where you can learn hands-on. In the meantime, here is a step-by-step guide on how to harvest olives.

Gather Your Supplies-

The first step in harvesting olives is to gather your supplies. To make this process easier, it’s important to have everything you need before you start. The items required include pruning shears, clippers, gloves, bins or baskets for collecting the olives, nets, and a ladder. Make sure all of these items are in good condition so that you can work safely and efficiently.

Inspect the Tree-

Once you have your supplies ready to go, take some time to inspect the tree before beginning your harvest. This will help you determine where to start clipping and what type of pruning shears should be used. There are different types of shears available depending on the density and size of the branches; make sure you use the right ones for each job so that you don’t damage any branches or leaves unnecessarily.

Harvesting Olives-

Once your inspection is complete and all your tools are ready, it’s time to begin harvesting! Start by laying a net around the base of the tree. Then begin clipping off small clusters of olives from each branch with your clippers or pruners. Be careful not to clip too many clusters at once as this could damage other branches nearby. If there is no need to clip then you can handpick all the olives (which is what we do at Italian Life). Drop the olives onto your net. Then gather the net and drop the olives into a bin or basket. Repeat this process until your trees are completely depleted of olives!

Harvesting olives can be an enjoyable experience if done correctly! With this simple guide, anyone can learn how to properly harvest olives without damaging their trees or their produce in the process! So grab your supplies today and get out there – happy harvesting!
